It was nice to dive into another book with Julia Cameron, but this was my least favorite。 I felt I already had many of the skills she teaches, and I also found it sad to read about meeting friends for coffee, etc。 during the pandemic。 Maybe if I try the book again in the future I'll enjoy it more。 It was nice to dive into another book with Julia Cameron, but this was my least favorite。 I felt I already had many of the skills she teaches, and I also found it sad to read about meeting friends for coffee, etc。 during the pandemic。 Maybe if I try the book again in the future I'll enjoy it more。 。。。more

I love Julia Cameron。 Because of her and The Artist's Way, I have been writing for more than twenty years。 I bought this book because when I see her in person, as I have several times, I am most impressed with her ability to listen to what's happening in the room。 She takes her time, pays close attention, and adjusts the class as needed。 In that forum, she is absolutely brilliant。All that said, I'm not overly impressed with this book。 It starts out strong but then seems to peter out。 The amusing I love Julia Cameron。 Because of her and The Artist's Way, I have been writing for more than twenty years。 I bought this book because when I see her in person, as I have several times, I am most impressed with her ability to listen to what's happening in the room。 She takes her time, pays close attention, and adjusts the class as needed。 In that forum, she is absolutely brilliant。All that said, I'm not overly impressed with this book。 It starts out strong but then seems to peter out。 The amusing anecdotes about her dog start to wear thin after a while。 It can also be repetitive。 The exercises don't have the same impact on me as those from TAW。I would recommend The Artist's Way, The Write to Write, and It's Never Too Late to Begin Again as her best books。 This one might be fine as a starter if you're new to her work。 。。。more

overly simplistic and。。。repetitive for me。 Too much reliance on asking for kudos, "atta boys" and compliments。。。 and asking for it all from the spiritual ether- and name dropping worthy acquaintances。。。too Hemingway-esque?I know。。。I'm probably too terra firma to appreciate this book。 I'll be quiet。 overly simplistic and。。。repetitive for me。 Too much reliance on asking for kudos, "atta boys" and compliments。。。 and asking for it all from the spiritual ether- and name dropping worthy acquaintances。。。too Hemingway-esque?I know。。。I'm probably too terra firma to appreciate this book。 I'll be quiet。 。。。more

It's hard to rate Julia Cameron's book, The Listening Path, because if I criticize anything in the book, I feel like I somehow wasn't listening。 First, I confess I did not practice all the exercises in the book。 They are not hard。 I just didn't want to do some of them so I didn't。 Instead, I chose which ones I wanted to do and let my intuition be my guide。 Second, the book has helped me become better at listening to others as well as to the sounds around me at home or when I'm out walking。 I als It's hard to rate Julia Cameron's book, The Listening Path, because if I criticize anything in the book, I feel like I somehow wasn't listening。 First, I confess I did not practice all the exercises in the book。 They are not hard。 I just didn't want to do some of them so I didn't。 Instead, I chose which ones I wanted to do and let my intuition be my guide。 Second, the book has helped me become better at listening to others as well as to the sounds around me at home or when I'm out walking。 I also reconnected with writing three pages every morning and having an "artist's date" once a week。 These are themes from the author's past book, "The Artist's Way。" Cameron engages the reader through her powers of description。 I can vividly see her home in my mind's eye and picture her relationship with her dog, Lily。 Her book is well worth reading even if you think you're already a good listener。 。。。more

I am not going to rate this one- but just say that The Artist’s Way is such a great book, and some of Cameron’s thoughtful inspiration can be found here。

Another enlightening book from Julia Cameron。 I have been working on being a better listener now because of this book。

Artists Way will remain in my top insightful reference books forever, The Listening Path not so much。 In the formal acting training I've had, active listening has always been a very key component, so much of this book I was already familiar with。 For anyone not familiar with active listening and meditation or focused attention practices it would most likely be insightful。 Which is why I still have it 3 stars。 Artists Way will remain in my top insightful reference books forever, The Listening Path not so much。 In the formal acting training I've had, active listening has always been a very key component, so much of this book I was already familiar with。 For anyone not familiar with active listening and meditation or focused attention practices it would most likely be insightful。 Which is why I still have it 3 stars。 。。。more

Years ago I followed carefully Julia’s Artist’s Way which launched me on my creative journey。 As a result, I hold all her works in high regard, this one being no exception。 A friend suggested this book and, though I thought it would probably be “more of same”, I am happy to have read it。 There is lots of food for thought, encouragement and directions to motivate the reader to be brave and give something new a shot。 Thank you, Julia, for keeping on keeping on。

I received this book as an audio book and was really interested in learning about "listening" I always remember hearing that sometimes we listen to answer, not listen to hear。 Although I really got some good pointers out of this book and feel like it would be good for marriages and even friendships, I thought it was very long winded and maybe over explained too much。 I am thankful for what I learned and for the gifted book。 I received this book as an audio book and was really interested in learning about "listening" I always remember hearing that sometimes we listen to answer, not listen to hear。 Although I really got some good pointers out of this book and feel like it would be good for marriages and even friendships, I thought it was very long winded and maybe over explained too much。 I am thankful for what I learned and for the gifted book。 。。。more

I have loved Julia Cameron's work before, but this one。。。in some ways, she comes across as this old lady living alone with her dog and you know how people get a little dotty and so into their dog? I'm not a dog person so after a while, I was like, I get these metaphors, but can we please talk about something other than your dog? Cameron has influenced me before via her book The Artist’s Way。 I had some profound changes and insights when I worked through that book alone and with a group。 The Listening Way is a pale, pale version of TAW。 That being said, I have started writing my morning pages again。 And, listening is a skill we all need to work on daily。

Harriet

Read with a group。 Good discussions。 Builds on her earlier work with morning pages and artists dates。

It took a few hours to glean some helpful listening practice tools。 I expected new insights - building on the original Artist's Way book。 Im glad I found it at the library。 If I had bought it, I would give it to a teenager who is developing these skills。 It took a few hours to glean some helpful listening practice tools。 I expected new insights - building on the original Artist's Way book。 Im glad I found it at the library。 If I had bought it, I would give it to a teenager who is developing these skills。 。。。more

I 'discovered' Julia Cameron more than 20 years ago and really loved what I was hearing。 Good practical advice for opening up creative channels through journaling, walking, and artist's dates with oneself。 All good stuff。That said, this and pretty much all of her subsequent materials since The Artist's Way are copycats。 Not that we don't need reminders to pay attention to ourselves, our feelings, and to others, but there is not much new here and there is a strange inclusion of "woo-woo" (her wor I 'discovered' Julia Cameron more than 20 years ago and really loved what I was hearing。 Good practical advice for opening up creative channels through journaling, walking, and artist's dates with oneself。 All good stuff。That said, this and pretty much all of her subsequent materials since The Artist's Way are copycats。 Not that we don't need reminders to pay attention to ourselves, our feelings, and to others, but there is not much new here and there is a strange inclusion of "woo-woo" (her words) that is about talking to the dead。 A bit strange, but oh well。I'll be closing the door on future books, but can recommend going back to her grass roots。 。。。more

I love the theme and discussion this book can insight。 The exercises are great things to do with a reading/discussion group, so that there is ample time to reflect upon what might have been experienced。 I’m happy I read this one with a group。 I’m not sure if I would have finished if I did it alone。 My one criticism is that I felt some of the chapter’s reading did not complement the activities in a clear cut way。 For any readers practicing this type of listening for the first time, I recommend re I love the theme and discussion this book can insight。 The exercises are great things to do with a reading/discussion group, so that there is ample time to reflect upon what might have been experienced。 I’m happy I read this one with a group。 I’m not sure if I would have finished if I did it alone。 My one criticism is that I felt some of the chapter’s reading did not complement the activities in a clear cut way。 For any readers practicing this type of listening for the first time, I recommend reading through this with at least a partner so you can support each other during these in-betweens, 。。。more

While I enjoyed the premise of this book, and the writing, I found it hard to engage with。 I guess right now might not be the ideal time given Covid restrictions。 It was also hard for me to consistently do the morning pages, still too dark in the AM to get by without a light。 But as spring comes I will hopefully get into the swing of it。

Not my favorite of Cameron's books on creativity, but like always she has some interesting things to say and a beautiful mastery of language。 This book is about where and how we put our attention and the voices we listen to which can either help us or hurt us。 Each chapter is devoted to a different type of listening such as listening to your environment, listening to yourself and listening to your heroes。 Cameron also doubles back on her timeless advice on writing morning pages, taking yourself Not my favorite of Cameron's books on creativity, but like always she has some interesting things to say and a beautiful mastery of language。 This book is about where and how we put our attention and the voices we listen to which can either help us or hurt us。 Each chapter is devoted to a different type of listening such as listening to your environment, listening to yourself and listening to your heroes。 Cameron also doubles back on her timeless advice on writing morning pages, taking yourself on artist dates and taking walks。I especially enjoyed her idea of finding "believing mirrors" which are people who will support you and give you positive feedback and suggestions。 Writers in particular receive a lot of critiques, but often we need someone who can believe in us。 If you are a first time reader of Cameron, I would recommend The Artists Way, but each of her books has something to offer。 。。。more

Read this book with a small group of writers。 The book is a short extension of Cameron’s The Artist’s Way。 It offers some good ideas for discussion while on the creative journey。

What was this even about? This was a weird book。 I can't really see what value there was in it。 It's supposed to teach you how to be more creative and a better listener but did that happen? Were those topics even covered? The book is just full of vague fluff like "Go for walks" and "Go to concerts or do creative activities to get the ole creative juices flowing" and while those might be good things to do in general, it doesn't seem like insightful or detailed enough instruction to warrant a book What was this even about? Julia Cameron’s 12-week manual, “The Artist’s Way: a Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity,” is ultra groundbreaking to creatives of any ilk。 Each non-fiction book Cameron has published since then reiterates much of her original teachings — but for me, the repetition often works。 This newest text is a 6-week DIY course that emphasizes the value of listening to each other, our environment, and ourselves。

This was a decent read。 It felt a little repetitive at times and some of the "tips" were things I don't agree with, or they were just common sense。 I think listening is a super important skill, whether it's listening to yourself or to others, so if you want to learn more about the art of being present and focusing, this is helpful! I vacillated between 3 & 4 stars。 I appreciate that this book got me to more mindfully listen, but I found the anecdotes kind of annoying。 The style of writing was kind of plodding。 It did, however, make me appreciate my friendships more and actively seek out connecting with them and being present in our conversations。 It also got me doing my Morning Pages again and walking。 Artist dates will be next! So there was value in reading this book。

Some good reminders about just how important morning pages, the artist date and daily walks are。 but it felt like most of the book was about Lily, the author’s pup。
